Amber is the one, true world. All others are shadows, reflections of Amberís ultimate reality, and they are as limitless as imagination. The royal family of Amber all have the ability to walk between shadow worlds, and even to manipulate these alternate realities.

Amberís patriarch has disappeared and his throne has been usurped by his son Eric, while his other children plot amongst themselves. Only Corwin fights to reclaim his homeworld, but he knows that any direct attack on Amber would be doomed to failure. Ericís armies are strong, and the magic of Amber neutralizes conventional weapons.
