All-American Men of War

 AAMW   (DC, 1952-1966)

™ and ©1962 DC Comics

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

This rose from the ashes of All American Western, hence the unusual numbering. As with other DC war titles, unconnected short stories are the order of the day throughout the 1950s. Almost from the start, the title favored editor Robert Kanigher’s stable of top-flight artists, with plenty of work from Russ Heath, Joe Kubert, Jerry Grandinetti, Irv Novick, and the team of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. The first year saw notable additional art contributions from Bernie Krigstein (#2, 3, 5) and Gene Colan (#3, 4, 6-8), while a little later Wally Wood (#29, 30), John Severin (#58), and Bill Everett (#77) all left their mark. Mort Drucker is worthy of a special mention for his exceptional combination of realism, grit, and narrative, and his work can be found in #47, 48, 52, 58, 61, 63, 68, 69, 71, 73, 74, and #77. Kanigher wrote most stories, although the likes of Dave Wood, Bob Haey and Bill Finger also made significant contributions. The archetypal 1950s story would use a gimmick or theme of some sort, most infamously in #41’s “50-50 War’ by Kanigher and Kubert, where a soldier who can’t walk teams with one who can’t see. The era’s best tale, though, was “Toy Jet’ in #78 by Haney and Heath. Atypically set in Korea, it concerned an escape from a prisoner-of-war camp, and was surprisingly convincing. As a rule, almost any issue to #80 will contain at least one good story and some lovely artwork.

Early attempts at series with Gunner and Sarge (#67, 68, then quickly transferred to Our Fighting Forces) and “Tank Killer” (#69, 71, 72, 76) foundered, but led to the long-lived Kanigher and Novick strip “Johnny Cloud.” The eponymous hero was a Mustang-flying pilot who also happened to be a Native American—“the Navajo Ace” as the title had it. The writing continually drew parallels between the character’s military endeavors and native customs and beliefs, even to the extent that Cloud would habitually thank his “brother in the sky,” an actual cloud conveniently shaped like a horse-riding brave! Cloud himself was a grim, uncharismatic character, and the strip’s most outstanding feature was Novick’s stylish art.

One final strip was introduced in the comic’s death throes, “Lt. Savage, The Balloon Buster,” a World War I aviation strip that was very much conceived as a counterpoint to the German Enemy Ace. Savage was a sharpshooter given to saying “I’m th’ gun” (yes, it was written by Kanigher) and something of a rebel. The strip’s brief run in #112, 113, 114 and #116 never really gave it time to (ahem) take off, but Russ Heath’s art, particularly on #116, was glorious. ~DAR
