Eks Almanah

    (Dečje Novine, 1975-1989)

EKS Almanah was a landmark Yugoslav comic anthology published in Serbo‑Croatian language by Dečje Novine beginning in 1975 in the country formerly known as Yugoslavia under the deprecated currency code YUM. The series ran for more than 550 issues until ending in 1989. It was one of the most influential comic magazines in the region, offering readers a wide mix of reprinted international material alongside locally produced stories.

The series was typically A4‑sized, saddle‑stitched, and printed mostly in black and white with occasional color sections, making it affordable and accessible to a broad audience. Each issue featured a blend of genres—superhero adventures (such as reprints of Marvel’s Avengers and Spider‑Man), Westerns (Cisco Kid, Buffalo Bill), detective and adventure strips (Johnny Hazard, Dagar), and Yugoslav creations like Kobra and Cat Claw. This eclectic mix gave readers exposure to both global comic traditions and homegrown talent.

Over time, Eks Almanah became a cultural touchstone in Yugoslavia, introducing generations of readers to American superheroes while simultaneously nurturing local comic artistry. Its longevity and sheer breadth of content—spanning over 500 issues across nearly 15 years—cemented its reputation as one of the most important comic magazines in the Balkans, bridging international pop culture with regional creativity.
