Six Degrees

Six Degrees, a projected six-issue series from writer Martin Shipp and artist Mark Laming, comes straight out of the north of England, and is a stark, powerful, and ambitious tale of crime and punishment, moral and social decay. Interweaving plots connect two working class boys of the present with a grim trial from a Victorian court room, a well-connected priest, and the whole superstructure of post-Thatcher Britain.

Shipp’s knack for dialogue and Laming’s expressive pen-and-ink illustration style plunge the reader headlong into the socially stratified culture of northern England, where bleak working-class neighborhoods coexist with superficial bourgeoisie, and contact between the two worlds can lead to violence and brutality.
