Magilla Gorilla (Gold Key)
(Gold Key, 1964-1968)
™ and ©1965 Hanna Barbera Productions, Inc.
In 1965, Gold Key introduced their “Magilla Gorilla” comic book series based on a character owned by Hanna-Barbera, and star of its own Saturday morning cartoon show. At the time, Hanna-Barbera’s characters were extremely popular, and characters like Magilla Gorilla, Ricochet Rabbit, Huckleberry Hound, and Yogi Bear were at the top of the Saturday morning ratings. It was only a matter of time before comic books came along.
Magilla Gorilla is a massive, English-speaking gorilla who lives in a pet store with his owner and friend, Mr. Peebles. Mr. Peebles brought Magilla into his store when he was a baby, hoping to sell him fast and make a big profit. It turned out that no one wanted to buy a gorilla, so Mr. Peebles was stuck with Magilla—and the cost of feeding him. Backup stories include strips featuring other Hanna-Barbera characters such as Punkin Puss, Mushmouse, Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-Along Coyote.
