Super-Magician Comics

In the early days of comics, the notion that stage magicians could use tricks like hypnotism and sleight of hand as “super powers” to fight crime was a seemingly inexhaustible source of inspiration to many second-string comic companies. Street and Smith, a leading pulp magazine publisher, based an entire title around the adventures of real-life magicians like Blackstone and fictional creations such as Nigel Elliman, Ace of Magic, Tao Anwar, Boy Magician, and Red Dragon.

The simple, crudely illustrated stories were interspersed with text and pictorial instructions on how to perform simple tricks with cards, coins, and handkerchiefs.
