Marvel Milestone Edition: Avengers

    (Marvel, 1993, 1995)
™ and ©1995 Marvel Characters, Inc.

Affordable reprints of milestones in Marvel’s continuity, these are almost exact facsimiles in every respect down to the original ads, and letters pages. Of course, the upgraded paper, silver cover borders and $2.95 price easily distinguished them from the original editions.

They don’t come much more significant than the two editions available of The Avengers, their first issue and #4, returning Captain America, two Stan Lee and Jack Kirby issues deserving to be called Marvel Milestones. Issue #1 starts with Loki once again scheming to destroy his half-brother Thor, this time by manipulating events to cast the Hulk as a public menace. What he doesn’t count on is Ant-Man, Iron Man, and the Wasp also becoming involved and clearing all misunderstandings, then deciding to stay together. The Hulk was gone by #4, in which the Avengers retrieve Captain America from the block of ice in which he has been frozen since the 1940s. Ironically, without the unknowing assistance of Cap’s wartime ally Sub-Mariner, then battling the Avengers, Cap would have remained encased a little longer.
