Warlands: The Age of Ice

It’s the dawn of a new age. An ice age.

In a mystical world where sorcery has been outlawed, a blind mage, who has extended his lifespan nearly 200 years through magic, has seen enough war and bloodshed over his lifetime and is ready to let himself pass on. But an old foe exacts revenge from the grave, plunging the world into the start of a new — well — age of ice. Old allies of the weary sorcerer again turn to him for aid, as the world slowly begins to approach its wintry end.

The first issue of the new Warlands series is well-written by Adrian Tsing and sets up an interesting enough premise but lacks originality and does little that hasn’t been done in fantasy stories before. Ancient sorcerer Zeph is well-developed, and the impending sense of the world’s end is conveyed well, but little else is of interest. However, the beautiful blend of art and coloring by Pat Lee, James Raiz, and Rob Armstrong at least makes the story appear more attractive. Characters are creatively designed, the hostile weather is captured perfectly, and proper lighting is given to the appropriate environment.

It will undoubtedly be enjoyed by existing Warlands fans and will also appeal to those looking for a decent fantasy story. Those who want to see groundbreaking work, though, should visit a construction site.
