Otherworld

This first issue features nice characterization that makes the stars compelling enough for readers to care about, but the story is a bit difficult to comprehend.

According to Phil Jimenez’ editorial, Otherworld is an enchanted realm of fantastic adventure and amazing peril in Celtic mythology. Conveying that in the story would have been helpful. The story takes place on two different planes: Earth today and Otherworld. We learn that Otherworld is under attack and near extinction, and the only hope for its survival lies in the hands of one of its residents, who believes their actual survival lies in the hands of an Earthling. So off she goes to bring the Earthling to help—I think.

The art is the highlight of this issue. Jimenez’ super-detailed and realistic style, along with the inks of Andy Lanning and Jeromy Cox’s colors make this a pleasure to look at. The extra-sized, 32-page story is also a nice bonus for the price. I just wish that the stories of these two planes made more sense right off the bat.
