David Mack’s popular heroine Kabuki is far more than the simple performer of Japanese dramas her name might indicate. In fact, she’s a deadly assassin who works for the secret government division the Noh, and she chose the name to honor her late mother, a Kabuki performer herself. That tale—her birth, her mother’s tragic death, and the evil man involved in both occurrences—is told in this series, and it’s one in which a virtual circle of blood encloses the heroine’s past, her present, and those individuals who together shaped her life, for good or ill. It’s not a pretty story, but behind her painted mask Kabuki can hide the pain that has scarred her in more ways than one.

This origin story, reprinted here, pulls no punches in presenting good, evil, and several shades in between. An elderly general, his twisted warrior son, and Kabuki herself all come into focus in a tale written and drawn by Mack. And Kabuki learns that evil, too, can hide behind a mask.
