This movie adaptation, taken from a Broadway musical that was itself based on a popular comic strip, follows the adventures of a spunky little orphan in 1930s New York. The clever little redhead escapes from the harsh orphanage, but her freedom is short-lived, and the authorities soon return her to the wicked administrator, Miss Hannigan. Destiny seems to be smiling on young Annie, as the little tyke, along with her newfound dog Sandy, soon finds herself living in luxury in a magnificent mansion. It’s all part of a public relations stunt, to enhance the humanitarian image of billionaire Oliver Warbucks. Her good fortune, however, will only last a week and then Annie will be back in the vindictive clutches of Miss Hannigan, and Sandy will be on the way to a sausage factory. Unless, of course, the spirited child can melt the heart of the imperturbable Warbucks.
