Mad-Dog

Comics imitate TV imitating comics in this novel title. In 1992, television’s Bob Newhart starred in a new series, “Bob,” where he plays a comic artist from the Golden Age. Asked to update his series for the 1990s, he is teamed up with egotistical “graphic novelist” Harlan Stone. This new creative team has more than their share of tension, with Bob’s “Goody Two-Shoes” style conflicting with the “gritty realism” of Harlan’s vision for the hero.

That conflict is evident in this Marvel adaptation of Mad-Dog. Published as a flip-book, one story gives the adventures of the veterinarian-turned-hero as Bob would have told them, full of silly villains and wholesome dialog. The flip side gives a more contemporary feel, complete with the obligatory “ghastly experiment at the hands of shadowy powers” origin, and lots of street thugs to beat up.
