In 1995, Dark Horse became the latest of a long line of comic book publishers to acquire the rights to produce “GI Joe” comics. The previous license holder was Marvel Comics, who published over one-hundred and thirty issues of their G.I. Joe, a Real American Hero before canceling. The introduction of this Dark Horse mini-series coincided with the launch of a new, tougher G.I. Joe television cartoon series.

The GI Joe task force is not one man, but a group of elite military personnel dedicated to preserving and defending freedom at all costs. The futuristic GI Joe force defends the world from terrorist threats, in particular S.K.A.R (Soldiers of Kaos, Anarchy, and Ruin) and its leader, Iron Klaw. The new generation of Joes consists of a collection of colorful super-soldiers including leader Lt. Stone, Black Dragon, Mayday, Metalhead, Quick Stryke, Harpoon, Ballistic, Sgt. Savage, Freight, Short Fuse, and Tall Sally.
