Catwoman (1st Series)
(DC, 1989, 1993)

Over the years, Batman’s famous feline sparring partner, Catwoman, has had many origins, from amnesiac pet store worker to embittered secretary. This 1989 mini-series paints the darkest picture of her yet. In this series, Catwoman’s alter ego, Selina Kyle, is a prostitute held in thrall by an abusive pimp. A classic model of the abused victim, Selina stays with him—even though he is given to fits of violence against her. One day, after a particularly bad beating, she is left unconscious on the streets. There she is found by a group of nuns, who take her in and care for her. It is then that she meets a strange benefactor who teaches her the art of self-defense.
Clad in a costume that she once was compelled to wear to fit the tastes of a perverted customer, Selina Kyle is now transformed into a woman who won’t be a victim any more…Catwoman.
