In 1996, Marvel’s “Heroes Reborn” strategy turned control of its core titles over to Image, where Marvel alumni Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, and others gave new origins to classic characters such as Iron Man, the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four.

In this revised version of the World’s Greatest Comic Magazine, the Fantastic Four get their start in the mid-1990s. In this version, Susan Storm is a powerful businesswoman, her brother Johnny is a hotshot casino manager, Reed Richards has just perfected a quantum drive rocket while working in Susan’s employ, and Ben Grimm is still the hardy test pilot ready to fly it. Grimm’s ready—that is, until agents of Doctor Doom arrange to commandeer the rocket to intercept an alien visitor bound for our planet. The four heroes-to-be took chase after the ship with a prototype craft of their own, are exposed to cosmic rays…and turn into super-heroes.
