Fanboy

“Fanboy” is a pejorative term describing a rabid comics’ fan who loves comics to the exclusion of anything resembling a normal life. In this six-issue mini-series Mark Evanier, (best known as Sergio Aragonés’ collaborator on Groo), uses that stereotypical image to depict a series of slice-of-life events as seen through the eyes of Finster, the quintessential fanboy. He works at a comics shop, lusts after a girl who will have nothing do with him while remaining oblivious to a girl who would, and most importantly, has a vivid imagination which places him in situations with Superman, Green Lantern, or the rest of the Justice League. The notable aspect of this series is that while Finster is living his normal life, Sergio Argonés draws him, but when he interacts with Green Lantern, for example, Gil Kane draws everything. Evanier has procured some of the top artists in comics to depict Finster’s daydreams, such as Jerry Ordway and Russ Heath.

Far from being a simple humor title, Fanboy uses the Walter Mitty-type reveries as a lighthearted approach to address important issues like self-worth and censorship.
