Firestorm (2nd Series)

Replacing a white super-hero with a black super-hero, as DC does with Firestorm, is nothing new. John Stewart supplanted Hal Jordan; Jim Rhodes donned the Iron Man armor; and so on. What makes Firestorm different is its lack of acknowledgement (at least so far) of its predecessor, meaning not one word is provided concerning teen-age jock Ronnie Raymond and his brainy companion, Professor Stein. This jarring omission will alienate fans of the underrated original character and, worse, this new take on the nuclear man lacks something the former series had in droves: a sense of fun.

Jason Rusch, who is granted the powers of Firestorm, is certainly a likable and sympathetic character, and the art is realistic and expressive. However, this simply isn’t Firestorm. True, Rusch has nuclear-based abilities and he merges with another person whenever he becomes Firestorm, but old-timers are sure to miss Stein’s scientific advice, nerdy Cliff Carmichael’s reverse-Flash Thompson-like obnoxiousness, and Doreen Day’s summery smile.

Diversity in the DC universe is wonderful, but Firestorm should have been left alone.
