The Spectre (1st Series)

The Spectre first appeared in 1940’s More Fun Comics #52. One of the longest-“lived” comic super-heroes, he was actually the ghost of a dead man.

The Spectre’s story began when detective Jim Corrigan was captured by mobsters, sealed in a barrel of cement, and dumped into the river. Dying, he heard a voice which commanded him to return to the land of the living and continue his fight against evil. As the Spectre, he wields incredible supernatural powers which he uses to bring criminals to justice. Later he would fight super-powered menaces as a member of the Justice Society of America.

This first Spectre series presented the Spectre at his best. His powers were literally cosmic in scope, and the stories featured early artwork by comics greats Neal Adams and Bernie Wrightson.
