Mad was originally a color comic book for its first 23 issues. When it changed into its present magazine format 1955, the interiors became black and white as a cost-cutting measure. That was the standard format for years until the 1990s, when major changes were made after the death of Publisher William M. Gaines. Advertising and color content were introduced. But Mad realized that they already had approximately 40 years of black and white content that could not be reprinted, and so the choice was made to reintroduce this classic material in a colored fashion as its own title. And thus begat this magazine.
