Ka-Zar (3rd Series)

Marvel went back to the jungle in 1997, first with its Kazar of the Savage Land one-shot, then with this new, ongoing Ka-Zar series. They’ve updated their jungle hero somewhat, making Lord Kevin Plunder a bit of a music junkie (complete with Walkman and secret CD collection). In addition, the relationship with his wife, Shanna the She-Devil, has a more modern sensibility to it than before.

Still, what gives this series its appeal is its traditional setting, with Ka-Zar’s role as protector of a prehistoric jungle land filled with both dinosaurs and the more traditional wild animals. As the series begins, Ka-Zar is called on to protect his family and his land from Gregor, an old villain who once trained Kraven the Hunter. Now, he’s come to the Savage Land armed with laser weapons, and a desire to settle old scores with Ka-Zar.
