Western Outlaws and Sheriffs, formerly Best Western Comics, was an especially graphic and brutal pre-Comics Code Western series from Atlas (later Marvel), at that time a bottom-feeder in the comics publishing food chain.

Western Outlaws and Sheriffs specialized in stories featuring whippings, hangings, scalpings, and, on one notable occasion, cannibalism. This was the Western genre’s equivalent of the crime comics on the stands at the same time, glorifying the violence and lawlessness of the criminals and offering an equal measure of rough justice in the end.
