Eerie (Warren)

    (Warren, 1965-1983)
™ and ©1979 Warren Publishing Co.

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

Like its sister publication Creepy, Eerie was a black-and-white horror magazine that differed from most Warren publications by eventually featuring serials rather than solely short stories. Unusually, the first issue was a short-press-run collection of inventory and reprint material to secure copyright on the name, so to all intents and purposes #2 was the first proper issue. The first twelve issues of Eerie were predominantly drawn by former EC artists, so they’re full of the likes of Al Williamson, Reed Crandall and Joe Orlando. While EC alumni Johnny Craig (#2, 6, 7, 11, 12, 16) and Angelo Torres (#2, 3, 5, 6) excelled themselves, it was the moody wash work of Gene Colan (#2–11) and Steve Ditko (#3–10) that impressed the most. Of writer and editor Archie Goodwin’s many fine scripts the finest was #3’s “Monument,” the tale of a murderous architect, rendered in a suitably elegant and sophisticated style by Alex Toth. Dan Adkins’ breath-taking work on “The Day after Doomsday” (#8), and early strips by Neal Adams (#9, 10) and Jeff Jones (#11, 12, 15), round out this exceptional early period.

Sadly, as with other Warren titles, the late 1960s saw a calamitous drop in quality, and from #13 to 28 the comic was a sorry mixture of reprints and mediocre new material. Issues after #29 saw a gradual improvement due to an influx of new talent such as writers Gerry Conway, Marv Wolfman and Steve Skeates, and artists Pat Boyette, Tom Sutton and Billy Graham. More significantly, however, from #34 Eerie increasingly featured work from the more technically accomplished Spanish artists such as Victor De La Fuente (#35), Luis Garcia-Lopez (#41) and Ramon Torrents (#50). Amidst the European tide American artists were still very much in evidence, more so here than in Warren’s other magazines, notably Mike Ploog (#35, 40), Frank Brunner (#35) and Neal Adams (#53).

Eerie’s first series ran in most issues from #39 to #52. Esteban Moroto’s beautifully drawn sword-and-sorcery epic “Dax The Warrior” proved popular enough despite its frankly bonkers story-line, to inspire a flood of serials. Early efforts “Dracula,” “Werewolf” and “The Mummy” were patchy at best, but #52–57’s post-apocalyptic “Hunter,” by Rich Margopoulos and Paul Neary, heralded a golden age of continued stories. A typical Warren serial ended with the hero’s death, so sequels were rare, but Neary followed up his “Hunter” story with the equally well drawn series “Exterminator One” in #60, 63 and 64, written by Bill Dubay, and “Hunter II” (#67, 68, 70–73), written by Budd Lewis. Other notable stories were the Sherlock Holmes pastiche “Dr Archeus” (#54–58, 60, 61) by Gerry Boudreau and Isidoro Mones, the similarly Victorian set “Hacker” by Steve Skeates, Tom Sutton (#57) and Alex Toth (#65, 67) and the Greg Potter and Richard Corben collaboration “Child,” a poignant and moving exploration of the Frankenstein myth.

Issues #52–72 are overflowing with fine strips, not all of them serials, and both Bernie Wrightson (#58, 60, 62, 68) and Wally Wood (#60, 61) produced some of the finest work of their careers here. Issues #54 and #55 featured beautifully colored reprints of Will Eisner’s 1940s strip “The Spirit,” which proved popular enough to lead Warren to begin publishing a Spirit magazine. Two of this era’s finest stories were Bill Dubay’s superb “Daddy And The Pie” in #64, which predated E.T. by a decade and boasted typically fine Alex Toth artwork, and Budd Lewis’ “Godeye,” drawn by Leopoldo Sanchez in #68, a deliciously acerbic debunking of fantasy clichés. No-one typified the era more than the veteran Spanish artist José Ortiz, whose gloriously dark and textured drawings graced a number of continued tales. Most notable were Bruce Bezaire’s violent Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde-inspired “Jackass” in #60, 63–65, Budd Lewis’ grisly Western “Coffin” (#61, 67, 68, 70) and his masterpiece “Apocalypse,” also scripted by Lewis, in #62–65. Following editor Bill Dubay’s departure with #73 the comic took a significant dip in quality, from which it never recovered.

The post-Dubay period also saw a significant move away from horror to science fiction, fantasy and even the occasional super-hero strip, but though it never achieved its earlier consistency the magazine could still come up with the occasional flashes of brilliance. The team of Bruce Jones and Richard Corben produced a fine time-travel story in “Within You, Without You” (#77, 79, 87 and later to prove an inspiration for the comic Rip In Time), and also contributed a nice story to #90. Jim Starlin’s suitably cosmic “Darklon the Mystic” (#76, 79, 80, 84, 100) boasted both fine artwork and Starlin himself committing suicide, and was later collected for a one-shot comic published by Pacific. Issue #81 was a themed issue based around a Frank Frazetta cover, featuring contributions from Corben, Torrents and Carmine Infantino among others. More significantly, the following issue saw the first appearance of Bill Dubay and Luis Bermejo’s time-travelling cowboy The Rook, which quickly came to dominate the comic. Although rarely exceptional, The Rook was at least well crafted, and while its pre-eminence robbed Eerie of some of its diversity, following its departure to its own title in #105 the parent magazine became badly directionless.

With the exception of the odd Russ Heath (#98) and Alex Nino (#87, 92, 93, 95) efforts, the Rook era’s finest hours were provided by Paul Gulacy, whose “Trespasser,” written by Don McGregor in #103–105, and “Blood On Black Satin,” written by Doug Moench for #109–111, were career highpoints. More typical, sadly, were the likes of Pablo Marcos’ brainless “Beastworld” (#104, 105, 107–110) and the breath-takingly blatant Star Wars clone “Mac Tavish” by Bill Dubay and Pepe Moreno (#95, 96, 105, 107, 109, 111). Eerie’s last few years were, if anything, less appealing, with half-baked space opera becoming its staple ingredient. The sole exceptions to this were Victor De La Fuente’s “Haxtur And Haggarth” stories, which ran in most issues from #11 to the comic’s demise. Even here, though, the fine art was sometimes scant compensation for the poor writing. With ever-increasing numbers of reprint issues, the magazine’s days were clearly numbered, though the last few issues contain a few nice surprises. There’s the return of the Rook in 132, a lovely Howard Chaykin strip in #127, and, best of all, the first English translation of Paul Gillon’s masterful “Les Naufrages Du Temps” (#129, 132, 134, 136).

Between 1970 and 1972 Warren issued annual reprint anthologies, which they transferred to the parent title with #42. Subsequent reprint issues collected some of the comic’s most popular serials: “Dax” (#59), “Hunter” (#69), “The Mummy” (#78), “Within You, Without You” (#97), José Ortiz’ “Hard John” (#106), Leopoldo Sanchez’ “Spook” (#112) and “Jackass” (#115). Other reprint issues concentrate on specific artists, with Richard Corben (#86), Neal Adams (#125), Wally Wood (#131), Ramon Torrents (#133) and Steve Ditko (#135) those featured. For the more casual readers any of these would provide an excellent starting point for the comic. ~DAR
