The Freshmen’s second term kicks off with the young super-team fighting to save one of their own—from failing school. But as Annalee struggles with family issues and Norrin wrestles with self-doubt, sinister forces begin converging on campus. Their purpose: to uncover the secrets of the Ax-cell-erator, the source of the students’ mystical gifts.

Fans wondering how Hugh Sterbakov and co-creator Seth Green would up the weirdness ante in Season Two need not worry, since the debut of Mister Fiddlesticks is absurd enough to place talking beavers into the realm of the pedestrian. Sterbakov also provides a brilliant name-check for original mini-series artist Leonard Kirk, and some beautiful dramatic moments to keep the comedy engaging.

Will Conrad’s art style is similar enough to Kirk’s to provide continuity, but he has not yet demonstrated that joy of littering the background with incidental gags that made the first series such a blast. It’s to be hoped that he will grow more comfortable playing around in the later issues.
