Blood Nation

In the year 2026, vampires control all of Russia, and they’re looking to expand.

The first thing one notices about Platinum Studios’ Blood Nation is that it’s a pastiche of genres—most notably horror, but also war (a team of heroes not unlike G.I. Joe is assembled to combat the vampire threat), political thriller (something’s awry with the President), science fiction (the book occurs after a nuclear disaster) and even a bit of history, inasmuch as the main antagonist claims to be Genghis Khan.

James Devlin’s pencils are suitably creepy for the tone this book wants to achieve, and they especially shine during scenes of violence. Tom Smith’s colors do an excellent job of complementing the dark, gory atmosphere of the title. Most importantly, though, Rob Moran’s plot is an interesting one, and it’s fun to see how this book combines elements from so many different genres to create a desperate world which our heroes must save.
