Gerard Way, the singer for the modern rock band My Chemical Romance, writes the story of seven exceptional children adopted and raised by a brilliant inventor named Mr. Monocle. The story’s focus isn’t their powers or the amazing battles they partake in even as ten-year-olds, but instead is more concerned with the family dynamics. Mr. Monocle never allows the children to call him ‘Dad,’ is very clear about his favoritism, and insults them often. The children have no names, only numbers, and are constantly striving for any scrap of approval from their cold, calculating guardian. Gabriel Bá’s superb art brings this dysfunctional family to life in a compelling story of finding oneself regardless of parental expectations.
