80 Page Giant Magazine

Talk about getting a bang for your two bits. A forerunner of the DC 100 Page Super Spectacular of the 1970s, this aptly named, extra-thick reprint title picks up where the Giant Annuals of the early 1960s left off. For just a few pennies more than the cost of the standard-size comic book of the time, the twenty-five-cent cover price gave readers eighty pages of classic DC Comics stories. Most issues spotlighted members of the ever-popular Superman family: Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane (with Superman’s boyhood sweetheart, Lana Lang), Superboy, and the Man of Steel himself. Others featured the Flash in a number of “treacherous traps,” celebrated twenty-five years of Batman’s adventures, or boasted the best of Sgt. Rock’s battle tales. The Spectacular series ended with #15, a World’s Finest Comics-themed issue starring Superman, Batman, and Robin the Boy Wonder, but the 80 Page Giants continued to run under various titles in the DC line until the late 1960s.
