The American: Lost in America
(Dark Horse, 1992)
™ and ©1992 Dark Horse Comics, Inc.
The American series by Mark Verheiden in 1987 capitalized on the prevalence of conspiracy theories to tell an intriguing story that turned the patriotic vigilante archetype on its ear. Verheiden returned to The American in 1992 and resumed the theme of the incongruity of politics and ethics.
Governor Neilson believes the support of the American is just what he needs to win another election. To that end, he hires down–and–out reporter Dennis Hough. Hough was instrumental in the story of the American and the governor expects him to deliver the American’s support like any other commodity. The American, however, is unwilling to be used, and his disillusionment has made him a vulnerable target for a mysterious cult. When premature ads begin running for Neilson showing the American as a whole–hearted supporter, Hough finds himself in serious trouble.
— George Haberberger
