With a title that suggests both the word identity and the words id and entity, it’s appropriate that this book can be interpreted in a number of ways. On one level, the book is about online role playing among a group of high school friends. On another level, the book is a fantasy adventure as the characters frequently appear to the reader in the guise of assumed personalities as they participate in an Everquest-like role playing game.
The book includes a lexicon of gaming terms and the story demonstrates an understanding of the details and quirks of massive multi-player games. Writer Hee-Joon Son’s tale also examines the appeal of assuming another identity and what happens when the alternate identity becomes virtually permanent.
