In these cynical times, when housecalls by doctors have gone the way of the dinosaur and HMO’s discourage hospital stays of any greater length than three days, this collection of stories is remarkable. Not only for the outstanding artwork, but also for reminding us of what was once customary but is now unique. The friendly family physician is the hero of these stories as much as the spandex-clad vigilante is in super-hero comics. Some stories contain the traditional EC surprise ending that imparts an ironic twist, but most are straightforward tales of medical derring-do.
M.D. was originally published by E.C. as part of their “New Direction” after the implementation of the Comics Code. Forty years later Gemstone reprinted the series and collected it in this five-issue series.
