New Gods (4th Series)

After a long hiatus, Jack Kirby’s New Gods reappeared in 1995 for another go-round. The high-concept characters were created as a way for Kirby to tell a series of morality tales, and have obvious parallels from everything from the Bible to Greek myths. Like any Kirby creation, the New Gods also typically featured a mix of neat gizmos and overblown super-heroics. Unfortunately, this marriage of high concept and high action was not always a happy one, and although the characters enjoyed a loyal following, they were not always mainstream successes.

This fourth New Gods series attempts to update things somewhat, bringing the smart writing of Rachel Pollack and Tom Peyer to bear upon these notoriously difficult characters. The result is a well-paced, highly engaging series—although again, one with disappointing sales. John Byrne was brought in to redirect the series with issue #12, but by issue #15, this series had to call it quits.
