Buzzard is a delightfully unpretentious anthology series published by Cat-Head Comics. It features the work of a host of comix notables, including Steve Lafler (BugHouse), R.L. Crabb, Julie Doucet, and J.R. Williams. Its best and worst point is that it lacks a unifying style, preferring instead to give each cartoonist their own turn at bat. The results range from the incomprehensible to the inspired. At its best, however, it shows how flexible the comics medium can be, and how visual storytelling can be a daring adventure, rather than just a series of fight scenes involving spandex-clad super-beings.
