Excalibur: The Sword Is Drawn

™ and ©1989 Marvel Entertainment Group (3rd Printing). 1st printing ©1987

This is the comic that would begin the saga of Excalibur. Following the Fall of the Mutants, the Uncanny X-Men were believed dead. The two surviving X-Men, Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) and Nightcrawler, bear deep internal scars from the loss. But they are not the only ones. In Great Britain, the shapeshifter Brian Braddock (Captain Britain) grieves the loss of his sister Betsy (Psylocke), and the shapeshifter known as Meggan mourns her dear friend’s death.

Then interdimensional forces conspire to draw these individuals together. The Omniversal Majestrix appears before them and asks their help in apprehending Rachel (Phoenix) whom she deems a threat to reality. But when the team refuses to turn against its friend, the Majestrix turns to other methods of persuasion. The ensuing struggle would bond this group together into the team known as Excalibur.
