FOOM Magazine

    (Marvel, 1973-1977)
™ and ©1977 Marvel Entertainment Group

One of the hallmarks of Stan Lee’s reign at Marvel Comics was the creation of several fan clubs for loyal Marvel readers. These usually had crazy names, including M.M.M.S. (the Merry Marvel Marching Society) and FOOM (Friends Of Ol’ Marvel). Admission to the latter club was four dollars, for which you’d receive an official ID card, stick-ons, a poster, and a subscription to “Marveldom’s favorite fan mag”—FOOM Magazine.

FOOM Magazine gave its readers the inside scoop on the goings on at madcap Marvel. Included were news on Marvel happenings around town, profiles on creators such as Ed Hannigan and John Romita, features on then-new titles such as The Defenders, and decidedly young-looking photos of legends like Gil Kane and Walt Simonson. By no stretch of the imagination was this the hard-hitting journalism the comics press strives for today, but FOOM was adorable in its very silliness and self-promotion.
