Ultimate X-Men

Released at roughly the same time as Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, this title offers a revamped, turn-of-the-millennium spin on the origin of one of the most popular super-teams of all time. In the hands of writer Mark Millar (Authority, Flash) and artist Adam Kubert (X-Men), the mutants who form this interpretation of the X-Men give new meaning to the term “all-new all-different.” Professor X has been crippled by Magneto. Wolverine is an assassin sent to kill the professor, Colossus is an enforcer for the mob, Storm is more thief than goddess, and Jean Grey has the hots, not for Scott, but for Logan. There are more surprises in store, as the X-Men must hide from the homicidal Sentinels, rescue the President’s daughter, save the world from nuclear Armageddon, and keep from killing one another. In Millar’s view, the X-Men are edgy and yet likable, and a breath of fresh air after years of the tired old incestuous plot-rehashing that typified the X-books of the 90s.
