From The Slings & Arrows Comic Guide:

The Infinity issue preceding the second series is a “Black September” tie-in with an alternate version of the Avengers; it is otherwise forgettable. The new series proper was started by Warren Ellis and drawn by Steve Butler (#1–3). After a fill-in fourth issue, Ellis and Edginton (#5–7), and then Abnett and Edginton (#8, #9) paved the way for Len Wein (#10 on). Now led by the Black Knight and government-sanctioned, the team gained a headquarters but, as far as characterization went, nobody seemed to know who was going to be in the team anymore. The Black Knight, himself, kicked most of them out for not being nice enough and then managed to find a way back to the Marvel Universe just as Hardcase found his own way back, only to sacrifice himself to save the lives of his teammates in the final issue.

If the writers weren’t really putting their best into it, it was a minor miracle to get the same artist one issue after another, until those journeymen the Deodato Studios, came on board with Wein. Two backup strips, though short, are worth mentioning: “A Lonely Place” (#10), featuring Lament, drawn by the Kelley Jones-influenced Kyle Hotz, and a Ghoul story, drawn by the Pander Brothers (#11)—but don’t go out of your way for them. All in all, a terrible waste of effort that serves as a damning indictment of Marvel’s misuse of the Ultraverse. ~NF
