Thor: Son of Asgard

Though not necessarily billed as such, Thor: Son of Asgard is, if the first issue is any indication, a good series for younger fans of The God of Thunder. Taking place long before Thor’s ascension to the throne, when he and his pals (Sif and Balder) were but fresh-faced teen-agers, Asgard presents a clear and accessible storyline. Among other things, it introduces the titular home of the mighty Norse gods, paints All-Father Odin in a powerful, passionate light, and emphasizes Thor’s earnestness and purity in contrast to brother Loki’s deviousness and evil scheming. Plotwise, its most important function is to provide the setup for a potentially epic quest.

True, this isn’t the deepest or most political of tales, and the art, though nice overall, appears rough or unfinished in spots. However, its sheer by-the-numbers charm and simplicity make it a pleasurable—if not exactly gripping—journey into mystery.
