Marvel Treasury Special Featuring Captain America’s Bicentennial Battles
(Marvel, 1976)
™ and ©1976 Marvel Comics Group
This huge, special edition comic was released in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial fervor that was washing over America. Inside is a rather strange tale told by the inimitable Jack Kirby.
It all begins when Captain America visits “Mister Buda,” a mystical character who sends him on a strange journey to discover the heart of America. Mister Buda places a magical emblem on Cap’s glove which bounces him unexpectedly across space and time. One moment, he’s confronting slavers in the 1800s, the next, he’s facing down Geronimo in the Old West—or walking the streets during the Great Depression.
In the true Kirby tradition, it’s all told bigger and bolder than life, and the oversized format adds to the sheer impact of the visuals. Sure, it’s all a bit hokey, but this special edition is a lot of fun.
