Spider-Man: Death and Destiny
(Marvel, 2000)
™ and ©2000 Marvel Characters, Inc.
After Captain Stacy was killed during a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, Spider-Man became an obsessed, violent, vigilante desperately searching for a clue to Octopus’ whereabouts. Additionally, Jonah Jameson is writing even more outrageous anti-Spider-Man articles in the Daily Bugle. The stress of these events will have long-lasting repercussions on Peter Parker’s life and this three-issue miniseries reveals those origins.
In the summer of 2000 Marvel collected and reprinted issues #88, 89 and 90 of The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) under the title The Death of Captain Stacy. Captain Stacy’s death was a significant event since he was the father of Spider-Man’s girlfriend Gwen. This title expands and adds to those events with a storyline that supports subsequent developments that hadn’t yet been conceived thirty years earlier. This book is kind of a continuity insert. It highlights Professor Warren who unbeknownst to Spider-Man at the time, was infatuated with Gwen and attempted to clone her after she was killed in The Amazing Spider-Man (Vol. 1) #121. Warren became increasingly significant in light of the Clone Saga and this title capitalizes on that significance.
