Don Diego was a caballero, a landed gentleman and horseman. By all rights, he had little to fear when the Alcalde began forcing the peasants into slavery. But Diego was a man of honor and could not sit idly by while others were oppressed. He donned a mask and cape and became Zorro, a dashing and mysterious hero of the people.
In looking at Zorro, it’s hard not to notice the similarities to Batman. For a start, Zorro’s alter-ego was a rich playboy with a loyal butler who aided him in his endeavors. He also had a secret cave that he used as a hideout, and he defeated his enemies by cunning as often as he did by force. Such characteristics, along with his own unique style and flamboyance, made Zorro one of the most enduring heroes of modern fiction.
