The small blue crew known as the Smurfs were a national craze back in the early 1980s. Stars of their own Saturday morning television show, they quickly began appearing in the toy stores, and on everything from lunch boxes to adhesive bandages.

For their own part, the Smurfs were an almost nauseatingly cute group of munchkins that lived peacefully in a tiny village. Each one was a bit of a character, such as Handy Smurf who would devise ingenious and overcomplicated solutions to any problem; Lazy Smurf who liked nothing better than to sit around and eat Smurfberries; wise old Papa Smurf; and Smurfette, a blonde, who mysteriously was the only female to be found. The Smurfs were constantly set upon by a mean human named Gargamel, along with his cat Azrael. Gargamel despised the Smurfs’ cuteness, but all his schemes to put an end to them were inevitably foiled.
