Like many early Marvel titles, Tales of Suspense began as a collection of horror/science-fiction stories and eventually evolved into a super-hero title. Tales of Suspense underwent this metamorphosis in issue #39, when Marvel introduced Tony Stark, the billionaire inventor who would become Iron Man. An immediate hit, Iron Man soon joined the Avengers, becoming a key character in the Marvel Universe.

Beginning with issue #59, Tales of Suspense went to a double-feature format, co-starring Captain America in his first solo stories of the Silver Age. The issues that followed would be remembered as Marvel classics.

Following issue #99, Marvel decided to “graduate” these two characters to their own titles. Iron Man started over with issue #1, and Captain America inherited Tales of Suspense’s numbering sequence, starting with issue #100.
