This “final” Captain America story explores the bleak possible future first seen in Earth X, coinciding with the events of the sequel, Universe X. The American people, ravaged by mutations and demoralized by endless attacks from the Skull and Hydra, have lost faith in symbols like Cap, who has himself lost faith in America and his former ideals.

In a desperate plan to defy Death and alter the future, Cap has joined the quest of Mar-Vell, reborn in his current incarnation of a young child. Utilizing the dimensional portal once used by the erstwhile hero Cloak, they travel the globe, gathering the most powerful weapons ever created. But as they walk the cape’s dark pathways, Captain America is forced to relive pivotal moments in his life, especially those revolving around his experience as America’s symbol and his relationship with his greatest enemy, the Red Skull.
