Uncanny Tales (1st Series)

Despite the ghoulish covers, Uncanny Tales was a rather typical horror/science-fiction anthology of the mid-1950s. Early stories tended to be more lurid, and the first two dozen issues focused more on science fiction. With the dawn of the Comics Code in 1954, however, the series had to work hard to pump life into a horror genre that had been quite literally defanged by the new restrictions against everything from vampires to zombies. Luckily, it could draw on a host of talented artists including Gene Colan, Russ Heath, Joe Orlando, and veteran Bill Everett.
