Shanna the She-Devil (1st Series)

    (Marvel, 1972-1973)
™ and ©1972 Marvel Characters, Inc.

Shanna was designed as a female counterpart to Marvel’s Ka-Zar. Like Ka-Zar, she protects the jungle from all manner of menaces, from game poachers to white slavers. In this she is accompanied by a pair of leopards, Ina and Biri. Fierce as these animals can be to strangers, Shanna is able to communicate with them through a bond they seem to share.

This same bond didn’t seem to exist between Shanna and readers, however, as low sales forced the cancellation of this series after just five issues. Shanna has continued to appear from time to time in various jungle adventures starring other Marvel characters.
