ID4: Independence Day was without a doubt the science-fiction blockbuster of 1996. Audiences around the world were astonished at the sight of huge alien ships casting shadows over New York, London, Moscow, and other major cities. In the story, the aliens waited just long enough to move all their ships into position, then they began an awesome wave of destruction with the ultimate goal of exterminating humanity.

Within days most of earth’s major cities were gone, and even nuclear weapons proved useless against the invaders. The president, having narrowly escaped the destruction of the White House, traveled to Area 51, where an alien craft had been secretly been held since it crashed in the 1950s. From there, he hoped to launch a counterassault against the invaders and win back the planet. The date was July 4th: Independence Day for America—and now hopefully for the world as well.
