Cartoon Network (Magazine)
(Panini, 2002-2004)
™ and ©2002 Cartoon Network
The bottom line: Cartoon Network Magazine is a wonderful periodical for the cartoon aficionado of any age.
The details: Clearly aimed at younger readers, Cartoon Network Magazine has plenty of nostalgia appeal for the adult who was raised on animation. Hong Kong Phooey, Speed Racer, and Atom Ant rub shoulders with Dexter, Samurai Jack, and Johnny Bravo.
Among the high points: A send-up of Spy’s late, lamented “Separated at Birth” (Dick Dastardly and The Powerpuff Girls’ Him?); speculative face-offs between cartoon characters and real people (The Olsen Twins vs. The Wonder Twins, for instance); Space Ghost interviews Green Lantern John Stewart about the new Justice League cartoon (SG to GL: “You’d suffer a major beat-down at the mere force of my mighty power bands.”). There are puzzles and games and even a feature on anime.
But the pièce de résistance is a five-page comics story teaming The Powerpuff Girls with The Scooby Gang. It just doesn’t get much cooler than this.
— Jack Abramowitz
