The Hollow Earth

The acerbic Professor Scotty claims to have discovered that the Earth is hollow, and various tunnels throughout the globe connect to the hollow core. When snow giants emerge and enormous caves have doorways, it would suggest he may be right, but does he have a hidden agenda? Walter Kitty, as his name suggests, is a doubting Everyman, albeit more capable than his Thurber counterpart, accompanying his girlfriend and her father into the unknown. That Mark Shaw has chosen to tell his Vernesque story using funny animals detracts not one bit from the suspense and adds to appeal. Shaw is a competent cartoonist who doesn’t yet match the drawing skills of his writing influences Carl Barks and Don Rosa. His writing, though, is already an appetizing mix of clear characterization in a compelling plot. Long may this run.
