PT 109
(K.K., 1964)
™ and © 1964 by Warner Bros. Pictures, Inc.
This adaptation of the film starring Cliff Robertson is pretty much by the numbers, but from a historical perspective, the story is intriguing. On Monday, August 2, 1943, a Japanese destroyer in the South Pacific rammed the PT boat under the command of future President of the United States John F. Kennedy. Kennedy’s efforts to aid his men were remarkable. After he had seen the survivors safely to a nearby island, he tried to flag down other patrolling PT boats, but to no avail. His men lived on coconuts and rainwater, eventually making friends with island natives, and Kennedy carved SOS messages into coconut shells, which were found by the Navy and resulted in the crew’s rescue. This one-shot from Gold Key also features photographs from the movie.
