Kotobuki Ran may come from a long line of police officers, but doesn’t want to become a cop, so out of pure rebelliousness she becomes a “Kogal,” a member of a youth sub–culture with an ever–changing extreme look and an insatiable desire for the hottest and newest of everything. And, while Ran is no angel, happily scamming easy–to–fleece boys out of meals and clothes, she’s always ready to put her high–heeled boot into the backsides of the really bad kids and help her friends stay on the straight and narrow. By the end of the first volume, it’s becoming clear she’s going to find it hard avoiding her destiny. Gals! is a thin comedy with its heart in the right place that tries to put a modern spin on the stereotype of the cocky young buck who sneers at authority but is eventually tamed by society. But both the art and execution is as girly as Sailor Moon, making the creator’s domesticated depiction of Kogal culture suspect, to say the least.
