Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham
(DC, 2000-2001, 2015)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
In this Elseworlds tale, it’s 1928 and an Antarctic expedition has uncovered a startling, horrifying creature embedded in ice. Once freed by its followers (including Ras Al Ghul), this doomsday creature unleashes its destructive power on Gotham City. Only adventurer Bruce Wayne, with the aid of his young assistants, Dick, Jason and Tim, has a hope of defeating it. Mike Mignola (Hellboy) is as good a writer as he is an artist, composing a chilling tale that pits the Batman, Robin (all 3 of them), Man-bat and even the Demon against extra-dimensional monster gods (clearly patterned after the Cthulhu mythos of pulp fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft). Troy Nixey (who drew the Neil Gaiman serialized story “Only the End of the World Again” for Oni Double Feature) provides disturbing but vivid art.
